Caribou crossings along proposed Baffinland mine railway

Technical meetings were held this week in Iqaluit between QIA (Qikiqtani Inuit Association) and Baffinland regarding the creation of caribou crossings along the proposed 149-kilometre railway from the Mary River iron ore mine and the port in Steensby Inlet. Because of their traditional expert knowledge of the migratory patterns of the caribou, QIA demands that Inuit from the neighboring communities be involved in the process of creating effective caribou crossings in the right locations along the railway, which itself will take three years to complete.
