Caleb Oootuvak: The drinking water is being effected near the mine and have restrictions, and Mary River is connected with many other Rivers and Lakes, I am suggesting how for the mine is going to have an effecting regarding drinkable water for hunters who use these many rivers and lakes to fish and hunt. And the ships that are coming up to the North have to be monitored closely because people were seeing more than one ship discharching something from the ship when there is a rule that they have to do that 100 miles from the shore.
In the mining area, they are not allowed to drink the water anymore. The company needs it to have a treated water source. All the lakes flow down to areas where there are fish. The person from Baffinland said they are not sure about that information, he did not know if people were restricted from drinking water. The water from the ships must be discharged 100 miles offshore before they arrive into Nunavut waters. Even with all the rules and regulations, last summer he saw two ships very close to the shore, many ships were parked there. Not following the rules, so should have their licenses revoked. At Milne, the sea ice is low quality now because of all of the dust going into the warming water. And Milne has very strong winds in the summer. Dust probably comes from the ships. There are 3 lakes up there that have a lot of char in them, one still has a lot of fish. Perhaps the pollution coming from the ships is starting to contaminate the lakes, and maybe the employees don’t want to drink from that anymore.
