Haida Interview Part 1
About
Camera, interview and footage facilitated by Glen Kugelstadt
Edit by: Dan Dietzel
'The first week we had practice. We had to...everybody had to learn how to say their lines in Haida. And correctly. Haida is not an easy language to learn because there is a lot of – they call it guttural – when you are making the noises from the back of your throat. It is really different than English. English we just us our tongue at the front of our mouth, so it's a simple language to speak. But Haida you use all different parts of your mouth to speak it.'
'It was exciting to listen to people start to develop their Haida, because I got to hear it. As a child my nany spoke Haida language all the time. She rarely spoke English. So just to hear it again it kind of makes your heart warm.'
