He spent most of his life living a traditional Inuit life on the land and over the course of his lifetime saw the decline of traditional practices that had persisted for thousands of years and the creation of a new relationship with the Canadian colonial state.

Her parents are Moris and Mabel Nigiyok. She is fluent in Kangiryuarmiutun (the dialect of Innuinaqtun spoken in Ulukhaktok) and can also read and write in Uummarmiutun (the dialect spoken in the delta communities and areas of Inuvik and Aklavik).
