The Mary River Mine developed by Baffinland Iron Mine Corporation is a massive and unprecedented mining development for Nunavut (and the Arctic region in general). On the one hand, it represents a major opportunity for potential benefits to workers and their families, to Inuit communities and designated Inuit organizations, as well as to the territorial and federal governments.… Read more
The regional indigenous movement of the 1990s in Bolivia sets the stage for the country’s first indigenous feature film. Communities in lowland Beni are shattered by violence meted out by illegal loggers. Their defense of their lives and lands culminates in protests that change the political landscape of Bolivia forever.
The IsumaTV First Online Film Festival brought international and remote viewers an exciting and engaging online program of indigenous feature films, documentaries and shorts.
The assessment of the human rights situation for the Mary River mine begins with a review of how government protects human rights in Canada. According to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, governments must protect against human rights abuse within their territory, including by companies.… Read more

One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk compresses Piugattuk’s 96-year lifetime into a dramatized feature film portrait of one day in that life, a 24-hour day when the sun never sets, out hunting seals on the spring sea ice in May 1961, in the Igloolik region of north Baffin Island.
"The Marakate are guided by fire and feather… in their singing they will find the way… if there are no jicareros to provide the offerings to the sacred place, illness may come, or it may stop raining."
- José María Reza, marakame (chanter, healer, schaman), Cohamiata, July 2002
In 1985, Zacharias Kunuk broke the race barrier at Canada Council for the Arts when his Inuktitut-language video, From Inuk Point of View, was the first work by an Inuit or Aboriginal artist deemed eligible to apply for a professional artist’s grant. Kunuk was the video’s director; Norman Cohn cameraman; Paul Apak editor; and elder Pauloosie Qulitalik told the story.… Read more
Today, the political climate regarding greenhouse gas emissions is
likely to change, with the release of a David Suzuki Foundation and
Pembina Institute report on the costs of combatting climate change:
The blizzard here in Igloolik was quite substantial. Indeed, it's snowed here almost everyday for the past week, and last night's precipitation added to the white blanket that insulates and protects the Arctic earth.
Zach and I have begun editing the feature-length "Inuit knowledge
and climate change" film. It's a huge, overwhelming and totally
exciting undertaking to begin combing through the footage of elders,
scientists and our on the land trips.
Zach is back from Toronto's ImagineNative film festival. It's good to see him, especially sporting festival awards for "Best Short Drama" for the Tanya Tagaq's music video "Tungijuq", as well as a "Milestone Award In recognition of outstanding contributions to Indigenous cinema". Amazing to be here in the Isuma office with all the buzz going on.
Today, I'm uploading some footage from the spoof website of "The Canadian Tourism Federation", which was put together by "a small group of
concerned Canadians in Winnipeg and Toronto who are ashamed that a
democratic country as prosperous as Canada has done so little to combat
climate change".… Read more
Ullaakkut. Good morning. Over a cup of coffee, I write to you from wintery Igloolik as I look out of my window as snowmobiles go by and as a red orangy sky begins to form over the ocean water of the bay. We're definitely on the top of the world, Arctic sunrise in October is at 9:22 AM.
We just finished a short film by Roselynn Akulukjuk called "Aputili?". The name of this cilmate change related piece aptly translates as "Where's the snow?".
Zach said to me this spring that "In my lifetime, I've gone from the stone age to the digital age". This is the video to prove it. See our crew in action as we coordinate our project between Winnipeg, a campsite miles outside of Igloolik, and Saudi Arabia using satellite and internet technology. Arguably this is the first indigenous broadcast from "the land" ever done.
We're finalizing our youth-focused work here in Pangnirtung.
Yesterday, we took youth out "on the land" to learn about climate
change, and to take photographs that related to their stories on the
topic.… Read more
We finished the edit on this short video this evening. It tells Johnny Kilabuk's "Hockey Season" story about climate change. This story shows that climate change is affecting Inuit of all ages and backgrounds. From traditional hunting to hockey, climate change is seriously affecting the lifeways of Arctic people.
It was a beautiful and sunny day in Pangnirtung. The snow is starting to form on the glacial mountains in the panoramic skyline. We continued our youth-focused photography and video workshops at the local high school.
Joan Scottie is an Isuma tv writer from Baker Lake. She writes about seasonal activities, life on the land, her concerns about environment, nature and culture.
This site is part of an ongoing effort to create links between Inuit media artists in Nunavut and indigenous media groups in Mexico. It is also a reflection about cultural connections more generally. In what ways do cultural exchanges bring about new and innovative creative conversations? What do people learn from them?
