The opening of the Symposium after many months of preparation; Martha Michaels, an Elder from Iqaluit demonstrated the lighting of the qulliq with her daugther, Ann Henson, her grand daughter and her great grand daughter at her side. Synopsis:Well, this one was a small herd Joan said, between 1000 and 2000 caribous roaming the tundra in front of Baker Lake; obviously we bothered them with the helicopter as we were trying to reach our camping spot. This is a reason why people are worried about more mining activities around Baker Lake.

July 31, 2012, The mayor of Igloolik, Nunavut, announced he will step down from his position due to a potential conflict of interest. Nicolas Arnatsiaq was elected mayor in December. He's also an employee of Baffinland Iron Mines, which is proposing to build a massive iron ore mine at Mary River, and Igloolik will be one of the affected communities if the mine gets approved.… Read more
