Rooted in tradition, adoption is a reality that all Inuit families have experienced. In Inuit culture, adopting a child from a relative, friend or acquaintance is a common practice. Marie-Hélène Cousineau, the adoptive mother of Alexandre Apak, lived in Igloolik, a small island southwest of Baffin Island in the Arctic, for many years.

Danish writer Jorn Riel, author of For Morgendagen, the book that inspired the filmmakers of Before Tomorrow, is interviewed by Marie-Hélène Cousineau, co-director of the film.  He talks about his experience in Greenland and his love and respect for the old Inuit women he met as a young adventurer in the Arctic.  Noah Piugattuk was born in 1900 and lived to be 96 years old. He spent most of his life living a traditional Inuit life on the land and over the course of his lifetime saw the decline of traditional practices that had persisted for thousands of years and the creation of a new relationship with the Canadian colonial state.
