We often talk about the environmental and socio-economic impacts of mining projects, but what about their effects on people’s human rights? In this clip, Montreal-based human rights lawyer Lloyd Lipsett talks about why human rights are important in the context of the Mary River Project. He says that human rights impact assessment is an important part of an overall assessment of a project because it can provide information that environmental and socio-economic impact assessment cannot. By applying international human rights standards that countries adopt for themselves, we can get a clearer picture of the potential impacts of a project. Human rights impact assessment can be less technical than environmental assessment, and it emphasizes the participation of all stakeholders whose rights may be affected by project development.
