Nevee Uttak - Actor (Orulu)
Who's your character and can you describe her?
My character's name is Urulu. I have read the script, but I'm still understanding my role. My character is a quiet person and she's also a Shaman. I'm doing a voiceover for the story that was either spoken or written for Knud Rasmussen.
When did you start and how often do you rehearse?
I started a week after everyone started because I had a meeting for my current job. We rehearse everyday because we're correcting the translation since there are a lot of differences between the new and old dialect.
How do you feel about being a main character?
I'm very happy, I really like acting and being in this film.
Do you have any other acting experience?
Yes, I played a character in Atanarjuat and the character's names was Ulluriaq. She was the wife of Atanarjuat's brother (Amakjuaq).
How do you feel about this fictional film even though it's based on real events?
For Aua's decendents, we're very excited that they're doing a film based on him. I’m proud of our past. I learned more about our culture and it is interesting for me to see what it was like back then. Helping each other… There was no laziness! That’s what I’m proud of.
What are you plans for after this film?
As for filming, I haven't planned to pursue acting as a career, I'm more concerned about my current job.
Do you still want to pursue an acting career?
If there are films being made anywhere in Nunavut, I would audition; either here in Igloolik or any other community.
Any advice for aspiring actors?
If they're willing to act, they can do it. Because if you don't really want to do it, you can't embody the character. For those who are willing to act, I encourage you to get involved. As actors it is a challenge to remember our lines, but we help each other. I like the fact that we encourage each other.
Would you like to add anything?
I'm happy I have the opportunity to act in this film because it's for a community audience. Orulu was a shaman. She went through good and bad times. I’m just glad that I’m part of it.
