Douglas Krenak was born March 5, 1983. He lived for part of his childhood with his parents, developing, as did his ancestors, a strong respect for his people's traditions. While still a young man, Douglas became a very respected leader in his village. While negotiating on the behalf of his people, Douglas Krenak was sued by big multinational and state companies who attacked him for defending the rights of his people. Douglas went to the Vale do Rio Doce University where he received a bachelor in journalism in 2004. After his father left the indigenous movement's state organization, Douglas replaced him. Presently, Douglas is the coordinator of the Indigenous Peoples Council of the Minas Gerais and, together with all the other indigenous groups, speaks out for the state indigenous movement and the protection indigenous rights. Douglas Krenak is also a lecturer in schools, universities and other organizations that are interested in indigenous struggles.
