Warm Up The Ice Cream 2026 Re-write
Warm Up the Ice Cream
In Memory of James Nicholas
By Donald Alfred Morin
Playwright's Note
Originally written in **1984** while I was living in a Vancouver warehouse during my early Bohemian years as an emerging artist, *Warm Up the Ice Cream* has remained with me for more than four decades. What began as handwritten journal entries has grown through numerous rewrites into the most complete version of the play to date.
The work reflects many influences that shaped my artistic development during the 1980s, including experimental theatre, performance art, modern dance, literature, philosophy, and Indigenous storytelling. While traces of those early explorations remain, the play has matured into an original theatrical work with its own distinct voice.
*Warm Up the Ice Cream* is an existential Indigenous comedy-drama that blends humour, ritual, memory, movement, and media into a theatrical experience that invites audiences to question identity, history, relationships, and the stories we inherit. It moves between the absurd and the deeply personal, asking how people create meaning within a world that often appears fragmented and contradictory.
The current edition represents a fully revised workshop script developed for professional production. It is accompanied by an extensive workshop package documenting the play's history, artistic influences, development process, and production possibilities.
This play is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend and collaborator **James Nicholas**, whose generosity, humour, and artistic spirit continue to inspire this work.
