James Ford, Climate Change Scientist, discusses food security in relation to climate change
À propos
James speaks about his work in Igloolik in terms of the effect of climate change on food security. He says this is mostly in terms of access rather than the health of certain species. Hunters get stuck in communities, unable to get out to hunting grounds. The thickening of the ice is taking much longer and people are relying on store foods more and more. The household income is 2/3 the Canadian average whereas store food is twice as expensive. Adaptation is occurring, the hunters are traveling about twice as far to hunt because of these access issues but this in turn is costing the hunters more gas, which is far too expensive. He mentions the effects that the new mine in Igloolik and its new shipping routes (which will be heavily traveled) might affect the walrus population, which the community relies on.
