Starting in 2006 Isuma developed the Indigenous Film Network (IFN), an initiative to expand feature film distribution by bringing aboriginal films through high-definition video projections to over 200 remote Inuit, First Nations, and other indigenous communities across Canada and internationally. In its second phase starting beginning of 2007, IFN will install permanent high-definition projectors in selected communities and deliver films regularly by internet video downloads. Indigenous Film Network Screening
The Indigenous Film Network brings high-definition video projection of aboriginal films to remote Inuit, First Nations, and other indigenous communities across Canada and internationally.
Since 2006, IFN has screened The Journals of Knud Rasmussen and other indigenous films in over 80 communities in Nunavut, Nunavik, Ontario, Quebec, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta, Alaska, Greenland, and the United States. Recently, IFN has been to Mexico City.
Our Journey
Opening the Toronto International Film Festival in the language and voice of the colonized transforms The Journals into an historic national honor: the first film invited to carry forward the rich belief system of Aboriginal people to an Opening Night audience of Canada’s most powerful and privileged. The duality of this event continues through the film’s 35mm cinema release by using the new potential of digital HD to bring The Journals at the same time to audiences in remote northern Aboriginal communities.
IFN News
On April 24, 2007, the IFN tour had its first Latin American screening of The Journals of Knud Rasmussen in Mexico City.
During the months of May and June, our team will go to Aasiaat, Paamiut and Nuuk in Greenland to screen The Journals and other documentaries. The screening dates will be announced shortly.
As part of IFN’s second phase, Igloolik Isuma Productions installed a second Portable HD Cinema Kit in Igloolik. The community of Puvirnituq has already started to screen various films and documentaries with the Portable HD Cinema Kit that was installed during the annual spring Snow Festival.
The communities use these cinema kits to screen their own family and community videos as well as films and documentaries in the IFN catalogue.
