Kronos in Glasgow: Kronos Quartet with Alim Qasimov, Ritva Koistinen and Tanya Tagaq

Saturday 14th May 2011, 7.30pm

Old Fruitmarket

Kronos perform three dramatically contrasting collaborations in a spectacular world fusion triple bill. Kronos Quartet join forces with Alim Qasimov Ensemble, Ritva Koistinen and Tanya Tagaq Gillis to explore cultures and traditions across the globe.

Kronos Quartet open the show with a collaboration with Finnish musician Ritva Koistinen. One of the leading players of the kantele, a traditional plucked string instrument, Koistinen began performing with the Kronos Quartet after its artistic director, David Harrington, contacted her after hearing her recording of Arvo Pärt’s Pari Intervallo.

The astounding Azerbaijani musician and Mugham singer Alim Qasimov and his ensemble then join Kronos for a performance of traditional Azerbaijani repertoire.

In the third part of the concert, the extraordinary Inuit throat singer from Canada, Tanya Tagaq Gillis, performs Tundra Songs. Canadian composer Derek Charke’s composition paints a mesmerizing Arctic soundscape, with each movement exploring a specific sound world.
Tickets: £17.50
