Interview with Dana Moraes and Graham Richard

'This particular script came to us very gradually. Very organically.'

'The script is based, or inspired by, traditional Haida stories.'

'Our story is definitely fiction but it's based in reality.'

'We went over and over and over that script so many times.'

'We consulted a lot.'

'There is a lot of community input for sure. And the whole concept of the whole movie is based on what our community has handed to us through out generations.'

'There was a lot of different people translating.'

'It was great and very encouraging to have their [the elders] approval and see them getting excited and see the potentiality.'

'This film is going to go everywhere. But the most important audience it's here at home.'

'Writing the script...we had all these different ideas of what we could do. And one of the problems that kep coming up was that we couldn't do a lot of things. Because everything [our ancestors] did was so big and epic. And took so much hard work. They would work all day, every day. To film a story about a village we would have had to actually build 40 long houses and 40 poles, and that's like a billion dollar project, right. So we kept having to sort of size it down and size it down so that we could contain it and actually do something.'

‘I was born and raised in Skidegate’

‘I actually submitted a 50-pages story that I’ve written a long time ago. And that was too long and they wanted me to write something else but I didn’t get a chance to write anything else.’

"It's so culturally involved and an inspiration for other Nations to do it."

“Of course I’m interested in any kind of thing that pushes Haida culture into the new centuries.”

“[Atanarjuat] portraits real authentic story from the Nations it was from. It kind of gives you an idea about of how you can represent your culture on the screen.”
