 Monica is a respected elder from the community of Rankin Inlet.
She and her late husband Thomas have thirteen children, five of
whom are deaf. Monica’s life story provides insight into customary experiences of living on the land in the region of Garry Lake.
Eventually settling in Rankin Inlet, Monica eloquently explains her positive attitude toward having deaf children, and their involvement in family and community life through the use of sign language.
Monica is an exceptionally talented Inuit artist who makes
handcrafted clothing, dolls, beadwork and jewelry.
