Isialiqsijuq - Adding the instep
About
Still using the uiguatuq stitch, she starts sewing the instep. The two materials are overlapped slightly. The seamstress starts on one end. Her instep has a fold in the middle that will tell her where the middle of instep and the middle of the kamik will meet. This will help her as she will need to gather one material and keep the instep straight. Making slightly larger stitches on the kamik, and smaller ones on the instep will create a gathering on the kamik. She also chews the edges of the skin to soften the tough leather for easier sewing. The gathering is decorative. It shouldn't be too much or too little gathering. Getting the right gathering on top of the instep will make a beautiful kamik.
