"Watching People In Different Places" is a powerful anti-war anthem and social commentary originally written by Donald Morin in 2002. The song was born from the experiences of famed Anishinaabe painter Janice Toulouse during her prestigious residency at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
As Janice witnessed the world from Ground Zero in the wake of 9/11, she saw the shift in the political landscape—the implementation of the Patriot Act and the dangerous new initiatives that sought to redefine Native resistance as "terrorism." Drawing on the legacy of Alcatraz, Richard Oaks, and the long history of the Indian Wars, this song is a witness to the "watching" eyes of the state and the resilient spirit of Indigenous people.
