Interview with Dana Moraes and Graham Richard
"The language [Haida] has changed me"
"There was a point in my learning where my teacher [...] said something really profound that changed the way I viewed the world, and the way I viewed myself, and just my family and self care and respect. She said to me, 'If you need help, how are the ancestors going to know that you need help if you can't pray in the language. If you are going to pray in English, who is going to help you?' So that was a really impactful moment for me. Realizing that I needed to learn how to pray in the language."
"I'd like to be able to pray when I have that opportunity and when it's trusted and given to me. It's like an honour. It's the direct connection to who we are. And to everything that we are. When you learn the language you learn to respect. When you learn the language you learn how live and how be. And you can't just learn the language and not know how to look after yourself. And you can't learn the language and not know how to look after our oceans, and our lands and each other. It's intense."
