NITV Community TV Channels on IsumaTV

Broadcasting Inuktut community programming online and through local cable TV channels in Nunavut communities.

Co-Director Zacharias Kunuk writes, “First day we all leave – five boats from Ham Bay. And right away the boat, that we later lost, started to have a motor problems. But at the end of the first day we were going through the straits with moving ice, but we all camped that first night near the cabin on the island. About the Community

The community has four names Kuujjuarapik (small great river in Inuktitut), Whapmagoostui (place of the beluga in Cree), Poste-de-la-Baleine (in French), and Great Whale River (in English).

On January 18, 2021  UVAGUT TV made Hisotry as Canada’s First Inuit-Language TV Channel

At 12:01 a.m. Monday, January 18, Nunavut Independent Television (NITV) launched Uvagut TV - Canada’s first all-Inuit Inuktut TV channel.

In 1985, Zacharias Kunuk broke the race barrier at Canada Council for the Arts when his Inuktitut-language video, From Inuk Point of View, was the first work by an Inuit or Aboriginal artist deemed eligible to apply for a professional artist’s grant. Kunuk was the video’s director; Norman Cohn cameraman; Paul Apak editor; and elder Pauloosie Qulitalik told the story.… Uqalimakkanirit
