In the past, polar bears weren't around that much. Once in a while, they would come from the floating ice, and we would catch them.

Back then, in summer time, when someone got a bear, they were all healthy and fat. I confronted the bear biologist in town because they're tampering with the bears and now the bear is not like it used to be. They are no longer scared of humans. Because of research the behaviour of the bear is different now. They used to run away from humans. Now, they're no longer scared, and they approach you.

Those bears that are close to humans must be hunted. This ensures that bears don't get used to humans and act confrontational, while making them healthier.

Now, they're getting drugged and put to sleep. They put tags in their ears and this must be affecting their hearing. Because of this, the bears are getting skinny, and they're not afraid of humans. I believe polar bear problems are caused by Southerners. Even if there's no ice, I know nothing will happen to the bear. That's what I know.

While making breakfast Kalla notices they are almost out of jam, so Ukaliq and Kalla decide to go berry picking for crowberries. Ukaliq learns that even though the berries are very tasty, if he eats as much as he picks, he won’t have any berries to make into jam.

It’s a rainy summer day. Kalla is happy to stay inside the tent and get some cleaning up done, but Ukaliq is very bored. The two decide to play ajagaq, a good game for when you are stuck inside. Ukaliq and Kalla have a fun day playing Inuit games inside the tent, where it is warm and dry.

        English Transcript:

      • 02:02 Kingulliit: The Next Generation (Part 2)

In the 1980’s and 90’s, as aging elders and Third Generation children become modern adults, southern radio and television introduced in 1982 increase the impact of foreign language and culture, and quickly alter the community dynamics of the settlement. Traditional respect for leadership by elders is undermined as Third Generation adults are prematurely empowered by new skills: the ability to speak, read and write English; to negotiate with white bosses and bureaucracies; to get jobs using new technology like trucks, heavy equipment, cash registers, typewriters, fax machines and computers.

"I disagree with the pathway the company wants to use. It is not that I am against mining. This pathway, I really disagree with. When there is a possibility for another pathway with no problems. The one they want to use is where the walruses migrate and congregate. When the walruses are disturbed they go further in the ocean. If they do their shipment through this pathway, the walruses will not come anymore.

There is a deeper water they could uses for shipment but they still want to use the shallow channel. We are trying to make them change the path. It is becoming a problem.

I completely disagree because it will affect me, my culture and everything else around.  It is a very important place for walruses and bearded seals. For us, it will be difficult to go further south on open sea when they will chase the walruses away."

      • 11:02 Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change: Jaipitty Palluq on Polar Bears

Japitty Palluq from Igloolik speaks about polar bears.

I grew up at Kapuivik and bears never came to our camp. Over the years, as I grew up, not very often a bear was caught in this area. Bears were very far away and we had to travel great distances to hunt them. Now, it's unthinkable, bears are everywhere. Last summer, I moved permanently back to my camp, after living four years in Igloolik. When I came back, every night bears came, and they ate all our food that left outside the cabins. That's how it is now. Different, very different from the past.

Back then, between 1950 and 60, there were no polar bear in the area I was born. In the winter, when someone would find polar bear tracks, it was very surprising. Being from a hunting family, when think back, bowheads, ravens, seagulls, geese were in few numbers. Today, they're a lot more abundant. What causes it, I don't know.

Due to climate change, the floating ice is melting, and the bears are being forced to move on land. Bears are now visible everywhere on the land. Even the main land. This was not like this before.

I've noticed female bears, which should have cubs, but don't. There's less males around. It's because the government tells us to only hunt males and we're only allowed to catch a few females. We haven't balanced our hunt of males and females. Females that should have cubs don't have any and end up eating other bear's cubs. That's how it is now. As a hunter, I don't talk about this, but I've seen it.

Polar bears when they shouldn't be skinny, some of them are.

We can't cache walrus meat in places where we used to. Starting in July, we would hunt walrus, and we would have many caches for the meat on an island. In the past, no bears would break in. There were no bears around. Today, I only cache walrus meat right outside my cabin, so I can guard it. If I cache it away from my camp, the bears would take it before freeze up. There's so many bears around.

        English Transcript:

The ice is not that solid anymore and it's no longer good for spring camping. We can't get to our spring fishing place anymore. The ice wants to breakup sooner.

In the past, when the ice started to melt, the second flood was still useful because the ice was solid. Now a days, the second flood doesn't happen and we don't see whirlpools draining the ice. After the second melting of the ice, the ice rises and starts to float, and the melted ice drains to the sea below. Now a days, the winter seems to be a lot colder. In the spring time, it's supposed to be hot, but it's cold.

Now, they say, there was better weather back then. Today, it's different, and the sky is no longer blue in our community. A few years back, in the summer time, it was so hot it reminded me of the south. This happens early in the spring.

In the past, we used to have warm weather, when I was a child. It was just warm. Now a days, where the sun hits, it is warm, and your shadow is cold. In the past, it was warm all around.

Maybe our world is tilting. We're in the high Arctic, the glaciers that we see near Bylot Island are melting. I went to Pond Inlet when the glaciers were at the shore, dipping into the ocean, and they were there a long time. Not too long ago, they began melting and moving inland.
