In 1991, Igloolik Isuma Productions gathered 13 Igloolik elders for a week of discussion, to choose and then record 24 traditional ajaja songs considered most important to preserve for the future: where did the songs come from, how where they made and how have they been passed down generation to generation?

Each elder remembers their own family’s ajaja songs and explains how they were created by poets taking their words from their life experiences. The video includes priceless footage of these elders singing and drumming the songs. The process also allowed Isuma to publish a full CD of the selected songs and to use and preserve many of them in Isuma's films over the next twenty-five years.

Unikkaat Sivunittinnit (Messages From the Past), Kingulliit The Next Generation Part 1, Igloolik Isuma Productions 1992, Kingulliit Productions 2012, Co-directors Zacharias Kunuk and Paul Quassa, Editor Carol Kunnuk, Videography Norman Cohn. Inuktut no sub-titles.

         ICE BREAKUP
Summer arrives in the arctic. Ukaliq is excited to use his snow machine one last time before the sea ice breaks apart. But Kalla informs Ukaliq that the ice has already broken up so he shouldn’t go snowmobiling. Kalla reminds Ukaliq of all the fun things there are to do during summertime.

        BOATING TO CAMP
While boating to camp, Ukaliq and Kalla spot an iceberg. They use Kalla’s niksik to bring it into the boat to help keep things cold. When Kalla tries to get water from a bigger iceberg, he realizes he can’t get the boat close enough safely. Ukaliq uses his longer arms to help get iceberg water, which makes the best tea.

Apea Sowdluapik from Pangnirtung speaks about the impacts of climate change.

"These days the wind changes direction quickly.  Weather would be good and then bad all of a sudden.  That's how it is today.

In the past, spring would have good and long weather.  It didn't change suddenly.  Now the wind changes suddenly.

When we had a strong wind, people in windy areas had their houses blown away.  Now, it's a lot calmer.

Certainly, we used to go to travel to the other side by ice until the end of June. We no longer can because of early breakup.

Last year, with all the melting, when the river for stronger, people on the other side had to stay there. They had to be boated to the health centre.  In an emergency, we had to dangerously cross the broken bridge with patients."
