English Transcript: The weather was not like this. It used to be good. Now it's different. We hunted for clothing in that area while the fur was thin. We used to row and portage. That's how it was.

Yes, they advised us well. My mother used to tell me to use my hands to measure. With no tools, hands are the best measuring tool for making clothes. I tried it and made a caribou skin parka.

Yes, of course. Our mother used to tell us: "First thing in the morning go outside", so that when we're in labour, it'll be easy. When we got out in the morning, look at the sky and see what's there. It might be different and you can see something. We were told to observe the sky in the morning.

Back then, there were lots of seagulls when we were rowing. Seagulls would be landing all around. Sometimes one would get caught while we were rowing. That time, there lots of seals and they would appear really close. Using some gun powder and getting the gun ready, they would shoot one close by. They start rowing hard. My sister and I would hold our breath so it would stay afloat. Sometimes, they would catch it before it sank. Once we have it, we would cook it at the shore with fire. We had no stoves, we cook using only fire.

        English Transcript:

Teaching how to live well amongst people. If I see any fellow man poor, give them something small, even if it's small. I was told to help others with food. I was told to watch the sky, but I never learned anything. But I tried to use the teaching and predict the weather when I have to go hunting.

And to animals, when they'll be in the area, when they will leave. By using the weather. Today there will be plenty and tomorrow comes and they're not there. That's how animals operate. Inuit used to try to know all this. I tried to follow these teachings, even though I knew I was making mistakes.

Even little insects, birds, we were told not to make them suffer, this is not allowed. If we break their bones, we were told not to leave them. Sometimes we see animals stranded, like in a cliff where seagulls have eggs, and the baby falls down and is dead or about to die. I heard, if any animal hurts itself, we're not supposed to help them. I've heard this, not from my father, it comes from the past. Don't help. Kill it or just leave it. That's the way it is.

      • 20:52 Caribou Clothing and Storytelling - English subtitles

In Caribou Storyteller Elders tell stories of people who lived on the land; showing us what the story is today, what it looks like now and who goes there now…with many questions around: are people still hunting caribou?

Is it still a caribou route? Is it still accessable to this day?

One interview is Jacky Qrunnut interviewing Samuelie Ammaq on caribou hunting, showing in detail the areas he has found caribou.

And an interview with elders Michelline Ammaq and Atuat Akittiq, a well known award winning seamstress.

Also in the video - Bailey Ammaq, grandson of Michelline and Samuillie Amaaq who is a young hunter following his grandfather's path as a hunter who provides for the community.

And Josepha Taqqaugaq, a seamstress in the community who works with different kinds of materials and animal fur to prepare and make clothing to keep her family warm in harsh environments.

This project was made possible with funding from The Department of Culture and Heritage, Nunavut Government

This feature documentary takes viewers “on the land” with elders and hunters to explore the social and ecological impacts of a warming Arctic.  Directed by Zacharias Kunuk and reseacher/filmmaker Dr Ian Mauro.

        LONG SYNOPSIS

Nunavut-based director Zacharias Kunuk (Atanarjuat The Fast Runner) and researcher and filmmaker Dr. Ian Mauro (Seeds of Change) have teamed up with Inuit communities to document their knowledge and experience regarding climate change. This new documentary, the world’s first Inuktitut language film on the topic, takes the viewer “on the land” with elders and hunters to explore the social and ecological impacts of a warming Arctic. This unforgettable film helps us to appreciate Inuit culture and expertise regarding environmental change and indigenous ways of adapting to it.

Exploring centuries of Inuit knowledge, allowing the viewer to learn about climate change first-hand from Arctic residents themselves, the film portrays Inuit as experts regarding their land and wildlife and makes it clear that climate change is a human rights issue affecting this ingenious Indigenous culture. Hear stories about Arctic melting and how Inuit believe that human and animal intelligence are key to adaptability and survival in a warming world.

Community-based screenings of the film are now being organized across Canada. Stay tuned for more information, new blog posts and videos added to this channel regularly.

      • 11:03 Inuit Knowlege & Climate Change: Peter Kanayuk on Childhood and Hunting Bears

Peter Kanayuk from Pangnirtung speaks about his childhood and hunting bears. "The most enjoyable, my favorite hunt, is the polar bear. You have a different feeling when you're after the bear. It's fierce and you're feeling happy. Not every day you catch a bear. Those were my favorite times."

        English Transcript:

In the springtime in June and July there would be no wind for a month. We'd be hunting all over the place.

Mainly seal we hunted. Beluga whale and walrus were caught very often. We'd go caribou hunting. Seal was mostly hunted.

Sometimes, at the floe edge, when its really calm, hunting at the seal holes. The most enjoyable, my favorite hunt, is the polar bear. You have a different feeling when you're after the bear. It's fierce and you're feeling happy. Not every day you catch a bear. Those were my favorite times.

I've seen dog teams hunting bear. It was a way of life. Most of the children didn't get to go out. Maybe they had poor winter clothes. I always went on a bear hunt as a child with my uncle and father when they'd go. I've seen it.

When they site a bear, we would notify our dogs. When the dogs get to the bear tracks, they really work hard. Some of the dogs would be let loose. Those particular dogs that can stop the bear. In a dogteam, most of them can't catch the bear. Only some of them can do it. The bear is stopped by the dogs.

They would cut the lines close to the dog or unhook it. The lines have to be short. Not a long rope. They were scared if the dog line is too long. The bear could kill the dog.

There's a lot more polar bears today. As I said, I grew up on the other side of Cumberland Sound. I saw hunters going out bear hunting. In the spring time, when seals had their pups, they'd go polar bear hunting. all the way to the point near Iqaluit. That's a long way to travel. At that times, when they went hunting, they'd site two or three polar bears. Now, at the same month, if I'd go down there by skidoo, we'd see twenty to thirty bears a day. Just traveling you see they're around. Some with cubs. There's a lot more bears now compared to when I was a child.

      • 11:06 Elisapee Ishulutak on how it used to be
