On April 12th 2012, a group of Elders and traditional skills experts from Ulukhaktok and Cambridge Bay travelled to London, England, with representatives from the NWT Literacy Council, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre and the University of Lethbridge. Jonathan King, keeper of anthropology at the British Museum, invited the group to spend a week in the Museum store houses where the largest and oldest collection of Inuinnait artifacts anywhere in the world is kept.

The collection contains hundreds of items including intricately decorated parkas and shoes, cold forged copper knives with slim, leaf shaped blades, remarkable bows made from antler and sinew, as well as all manner of tools and smaller items of clothing. Some of these objects date back to the first recorded contact between Europeans and the Inuinnait. Film maker David Stewart, from the Inuvialuit Communications Society, followed the journey and filmed the participants as they explored the collection, and London.

The stores are housed in an inconspicuous, brick faced building on a narrow side street in north London. Inside, in wooden boxes stacked on rows of steel shelving, were hundreds of thousands of objects collected from every corner of the earth. The museum regularly invites delegations from around the world to come to the storehouses and interact with objects from their respective cultures. These visits help the museum to understand better the cultural and historical significance of objects and provide the visitors with a chance to connect with their heritage.

The group had seen photos of the Inuinnait collection, but actually being in a room with the objects laid out on a table for the group to touch and hold was a different kind of experience; fascinating and emotional in equal measure. For five days, the group examined around 300 items and took thousands of photos noting details of the craftsmanship and the materials used. To these knowledgeable observers, the objects were like rich texts containing clues to forgotten skills, important stories and “sleeping words” that have lain dormant for a generation or more. They represent the ingenuity of generations of Inuinnait and offer a physical connection to the unique knowledge and skills that allowed them to thrive in one of the harshest environments on earth.

When the visit was over the group had taken well over 3000 photos, as well as hours of video footage. These will form part of a virtual exhibit and a documentary about the project that will promote the survival of essential Inuinnait skills and culture in younger generations.

Circa 1840. Two isolated families meet after many years. It is summer; a happy time to celebrate their reunion. Despite the joyful mood, Ningiuq, an old woman of strength and wisdom, cannot stop worrying. Is it the illness of her best friend, Kutuguk, who is preparing to die? Or is it the strange foreign object that Maniq, her favourite grandson, found on the beach? After a successful fishing season, the families decide to dry the winter's catch on a remote island. Ningiuq volunteers to take on this chore. Her faithful grandson Maniq follows her, as does the old Kutuguk. As the cold of fall begins the three wait in vain for the hunters to return. When the first snow falls Ningiuq decides to return to the main camp with Maniq to see what has happened to the others.

Interview with Dana Moraes and Graham Richard

'What is important is that we don't loose our language. That we have toward making sure it continues. Because our language is so much part of our culture and we need to remember the things that...like respect when is spoke about in Haida is so important. When we were children, if we walked in front of the elders once, that was acceptable. But if we walked a second time, we were sent to bed. There were so many things about respect. And then respect is such an important part because we believe in reincarnation, and some of those children that are born are reincarnated so people will really respect children.'

'I really didn't know there was so much work to acting.

'To find out so many of the people were related to me, and our relationship, was so strong, We ere all part of a community at the end.'

'I think that people who are interested in languages, not just Haidas, but all people who are trying to keep their languages alive I think that it's going to work in helping. Maybe other Native groups will start making this.'

'The children that were in the play were so much part of the whole community. They interacted with all of us, there was no devision by old people or young people, we were all a group.'

'The notes that Ben wrote for us, those were really important, my sister and I practice a lot.'

'The young children were really excited about learning how to speak.'

'I'd really like to see another film but I'd like it to be a comedy [...] because I think Haida people really like to laugh.'

        BERRY PICKING
While making breakfast Kalla notices they are almost out of jam, so Ukaliq and Kalla decide to go berry picking for crowberries. Ukaliq learns that even though the berries are very tasty, if he eats as much as he picks, he won’t have any berries to make into jam.

        RAINY DAY
It’s a rainy summer day. Kalla is happy to stay inside the tent and get some cleaning up done, but Ukaliq is very bored. The two decide to play ajagaq, a good game for when you are stuck inside. Ukaliq and Kalla have a fun day playing Inuit games inside the tent, where it is warm and dry.

With her husband Enuki, she raised eight children living most of the year on the land. Surrounded by her grandchildren, she recounts stories about the land she knows intimately and her life's destiny on Baffin Island.

      • 17:02 Unipkaaqtuq Sleeping Words

"I disagree with the pathway the company wants to use. It is not that I am against mining. This pathway, I really disagree with. When there is a possibility for another pathway with no problems. The one they want to use is where the walruses migrate and congregate. When the walruses are disturbed they go further in the ocean. If they do their shipment through this pathway, the walruses will not come anymore.

There is a deeper water they could uses for shipment but they still want to use the shallow channel. We are trying to make them change the path. It is becoming a problem.

I completely disagree because it will affect me, my culture and everything else around.  It is a very important place for walruses and bearded seals. For us, it will be difficult to go further south on open sea when they will chase the walruses away."

In 1994, fulfilling the wish of 94 year-old Noah Piugattuk to taste whale-skin maqtaq once again before he passes away, a group of Igloolik hunters illegally catches a bowhead whale after years of government prohibition.
