      • 04:04 Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change

This feature documentary takes viewers “on the land” with elders and hunters to explore the social and ecological impacts of a warming Arctic.  Directed by Zacharias Kunuk and reseacher/filmmaker Dr Ian Mauro.

        LONG SYNOPSIS

Nunavut-based director Zacharias Kunuk (Atanarjuat The Fast Runner) and researcher and filmmaker Dr. Ian Mauro (Seeds of Change) have teamed up with Inuit communities to document their knowledge and experience regarding climate change. This new documentary, the world’s first Inuktitut language film on the topic, takes the viewer “on the land” with elders and hunters to explore the social and ecological impacts of a warming Arctic. This unforgettable film helps us to appreciate Inuit culture and expertise regarding environmental change and indigenous ways of adapting to it.

Exploring centuries of Inuit knowledge, allowing the viewer to learn about climate change first-hand from Arctic residents themselves, the film portrays Inuit as experts regarding their land and wildlife and makes it clear that climate change is a human rights issue affecting this ingenious Indigenous culture. Hear stories about Arctic melting and how Inuit believe that human and animal intelligence are key to adaptability and survival in a warming world.

Community-based screenings of the film are now being organized across Canada. Stay tuned for more information, new blog posts and videos added to this channel regularly.

Rooted in tradition, adoption is a reality that all Inuit families have experienced. In Inuit culture, adopting a child from a relative, friend or acquaintance is a common practice. Marie-Hélène Cousineau, the adoptive mother of Alexandre Apak, lived in Igloolik, a small island southwest of Baffin Island in the Arctic, for many years.

This documentary, which she directed in collaboration with Mary Kunuk (an old friend and colleague), explores Inuit family relations through the personal histories of women who have experienced adoption in one way or another. In a parallel thread, the film documents the creation of an intricate felt wall-hanging that depicts key moments from their lives. All skilled seamstresses, these women of Igloolik use fabric to draw, cut, and embroider their personal life stories – an intimate portrait of family ties and a vibrant illustration of the role adoption has always played in Inuit culture

In 1953, Inuit families were forcibly relocated to the uninhabited and inhospitable high arctic, 1500 kilometres north of their traditional homeland of Nunavik, in northern Québec, to extend Canadian claims of sovereignty to Ellesmere Island. Inuit endured families torn apart and many years of hardship. Devastating first-person accounts of survival and broken promises express the continuing impact effects of these events on the people forced to endure them. Directed by Zacharias Kunuk, survivors tell their stories.

         ICE BREAKUP
Summer arrives in the arctic. Ukaliq is excited to use his snow machine one last time before the sea ice breaks apart. But Kalla informs Ukaliq that the ice has already broken up so he shouldn’t go snowmobiling. Kalla reminds Ukaliq of all the fun things there are to do during summertime.

        BOATING TO CAMP
While boating to camp, Ukaliq and Kalla spot an iceberg. They use Kalla’s niksik to bring it into the boat to help keep things cold. When Kalla tries to get water from a bigger iceberg, he realizes he can’t get the boat close enough safely. Ukaliq uses his longer arms to help get iceberg water, which makes the best tea.

Asiu is Artcirq's latest show and is inspired by the traditional Inuit legend Amaqup Nunaat (The Land of Wolves) about two brothers who find themselves lost in the mysterious world of the Shadow People.

As a comical interpretation of this centuries old story, the show is part of Artcirq's development process to bring the full legend to the stage in an enticing multi-disciplinary Inuit production, complete with the true dramatic ending of the legend.

      • 05:52 ᓂᐲᑦ ᐃᓄᒃᑎᑐᑦ Atanarjuat Song by Paingut Peterloosie, 5:10

ᓂᐲᑦ ᐃᓄᒃᑎᑐᑦ Atanarjuat Song, 5:10, Inuktitut, sung by a Pond Inlet woman named Paingut Peterloosie. READ BELOW the words translated in English by Zacharias Kunuk. Camera, Zacharias Kunuk, Editor, Carol Kunnuk.

I’m going to sing my Ayaya song.

I recorded it once, thinking I would lose the tune. I broke it into segments and found out it’s a tune sung by Atanarjuat. I’m going to sing a segment now.

Aya. I found it beautiful, just beautiful, as we started travelling inland.

Dog teaming on the land, it’s hard to sit on the sled as you move across the land.

Running along now through this wet snow, we don’t think of how tiring it is.

We travelled on land and passed the black mountain (Mary River). What a beautiful site, this beautiful land.

I remembered my childhood. But when I tried to sleep I couldn't.

When our men went hunting, it’s lonely in this beautiful land. Was I afraid to be alone? My cousin and I are alone now.

When my cousin went outside, I was alone. I was afraid.

I then asked my cousin, “Where are you going?”

When she didn’t answer, I was afraid. Are you leaving because I’m afraid?

When I went outside, I saw my cousin standing behind the tent.

When I saw her, I was glad. When I became happy, I started just laughing.

This is a true story; my song happened.

We travelled by dog team in the summer to hunt caribou from Arctic Bay.
