Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change - Interview with Deborah Qaunaq.

I think sometimes our earth has tilted. When the fall comes and ice should be forming, it doesn't happen right away. In the spring, when it should be melting, it stays cooler. It now seems to stay cooler longer than in the past.

Although I wasn't paying attention, I've heard my late father say: "when the sun returns, it used to rise there, but now it's way off course". He noticed it.

Weather used to be better in those days. When mosquitoes came we'd have no wind. Today, everything seems to have shifted. In the past, there used to be more mosquitoes. Today, mosquitoes would still be around, but now they disappear. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because of the clouds.

In the dead of winter, when you blow out your breath would used to make ringing sound because of the cold. I don't notice it anymore.

The dominant wind is now from the south. In the past, when we had south wind, Igloolik Bay would be filled with ice, and hunters would be unable to leave. Today, when we have south wind, where is all the floating ice? There's less ice now than in the past. On this trip, if it were the past, we'd be traveling through lots of floating ice. We used to do that on our summer caribou hunts. Today, there's hardly any ice. Why? It's all melted.

This spring was different. When the first sea ice melt drains, usually the second melt leaves deep puddles on the surface. This spring, it didn't happen, and I noticed it. After the first drain, the puddles didn't form, and it broke up. I don't know what's happening.

"I disagree with the pathway the company wants to use. It is not that I am against mining. This pathway, I really disagree with. When there is a possibility for another pathway with no problems. The one they want to use is where the walruses migrate and congregate. When the walruses are disturbed they go further in the ocean. If they do their shipment through this pathway, the walruses will not come anymore.

There is a deeper water they could uses for shipment but they still want to use the shallow channel. We are trying to make them change the path. It is becoming a problem.

I completely disagree because it will affect me, my culture and everything else around.  It is a very important place for walruses and bearded seals. For us, it will be difficult to go further south on open sea when they will chase the walruses away."

Peter Kanayuk from Pangnirtung speaks about teachings.

"I was brought up to be kind to people and animals. My father's teaching was not to hunt what we're not going to eat. I used to want to shoot ducks and birds. He told me not to kill because they wouldn't be eaten. I just wanted to shoot and investigate the birds closely. To be a good person was taught to me, not everyday, but it was repeated once in a while. If you want people to be good to you, you have to be good to them. That was taught to me."

"We were told not to play or make fun of animals. Any kind of animal. Nobody is to make fun or play with them. Be kind to them. After all, they are our food. Even animals we don't eat. They are alive."

Jokingly, I was told, if I want or are hoping for anything, my mother used to tell me: "you'll get it when the ravens turns white"

In 1994, fulfilling the wish of 94 year-old Noah Piugattuk to taste whale-skin maqtaq once again before he passes away, a group of Igloolik hunters illegally catches a bowhead whale after years of government prohibition. This event which sparks a legal controversy, the hunters are charged, government policy is resisted, then changed..

In August 1996, with permission from the federal government, Inuit hunters from across the arctic gather in Repulse Bay for the first legal bowhead hunt in more than forty years.

Looking back five years later, Arviq! traces the history of the bowhead whale in the Arctic: from its traditional importance to Inuit, the devastation to near extinction by commercial whaling, as well as the media circus surrounding the legal hunt in 1996. Produced, directed and Edited by Paul Apak Angilirq and Zacharias Kunuk, narrated by Apak.

Arviq is a part of the Unikaatuatiit (Story Tellers) Series.

It's very noticeable. When we were children, the rise and set of the sun in a day has changed. At high noon, that's the highest peak of the sun. It's supposed to be there. At sunrise, the sun has moved to the right, when it's supposed to there. It seems like our world has tilted. Even the north wind, it has shifted, and now seems like it's coming from the east. Now we have east wind and it's clear like it used to be when we had north winds. It's all moved. It's very noticeable.

Concerning our ice, we know it's melting. In our ocean, there used to be multi-year ice, and now it's melting away. We're only getting first year ice in the fall. The ice is always all melted now. It was never like this before. The ice in Fox Basin is disappearing. We get ice from Aguu Bay, that white multi-year ice, but sometimes it doesn't come now. You know it's melting too. It's very noticeable. Maybe due to this melting the animals are disappearing. That's how it is now. It the past, we used to the south wind, and all the sea creatures would become more abundant. It was always like that. I don't know why they're disappearing. Maybe our sea is too warm. But, what do I know?

Adults before me, they always told us to use our land travel routes. Today, we use any route we want. That's how we are now. All the old routes, we don't use them. Some of them we don't know how to use. In the past, we were instructed to use only these routes and not to travel all over the place. If we used the old routes that does not disturb the animals. That's how we were instructed.

      • 11:06 Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change: Peter Kanayuk on Animal Health

Peter Kanayuk from Pangnirtung speaks about animal health.

Maybe in those days, we had a better sense of smell and taste, and we remember that. Back then, caribou used to taste more flavourful. All the animals we catch, when they're fresh, they taste better. Today, that taste isn't the same. Maybe because of my old age, but it does seem different now.

When I was a young man, I had never seen it. We call them "tisigaalik" here. It's not till we moved to Pang that I started seeing them. Some of the caribou have a lot of those white spots in their meat.

They seem to be safe. Nobody has gotten sick. But, we try to not eat that meat when we see the white spots. For sure, we eat the meat when they're not there. I've haven't seen anybody get sick. When there's too many white spots, we don't like it. Sometimes, we eat the meat when there's not too many white spots.

Caribou are starting to have nostril fly eggs in their throats, when we've never seen this before. They're growing near the throat. It's similar to the insects that we've already observed laying eggs in the caribou back fat. We're seeing these nostril flies more and more now. This is new to us, although regions further south have always had it.

You really notice that seals don't grow fur like they used to. Seals grow new fur when sunbathing on the ice. Now they don't have time to shed due to early ice breakup. We catch these seals during the summer and fall and now they have two types of fur. Normally, every year they shed on top of the ice and get new fur. But now, the old fur stays on the same skin along with the new fur.

Lasalusie Ishulutaq from Pangnirtung shares his views on Climate Change. "The sun is hotter now", he says.  "In recent years, it turned really hot.  When I took my family out, I had never experienced the heat that way.  I've noticed that a lot and it brings me to tears."

        Full English Transcript:

I have noticed, while it's happening, as I've grown older. It's the tide now. Back then, when we had a strong current, it used to only be three days where it would rise most. Right now, it lasts a full week reaching the highest tide.

The sun is hotter now. In recent years, it turned really hot. When I took my family out, I had never experienced the heat that way.

I've noticed that a lot and it brings me to tears. When I'm on the other side of Cumberland Sound, there used to be a glacier there, and the now the land is all gray. It used to be white with glaciers. Glaciers are melting. All over, in the places we hunt during summer, there's no more glaciers. At one time, there was a place where a polar bear was caught in a den, but now the snow there is now gone and it's all clean.

This I've noticed. Way back then, around 1960, when I was a young man, our environment started to change. We usually have a cold north wind, but we haven't had that for a long time, and it became warmer even in the dead of winter. Right now, the north wind is more-and-more out of place, as it seems to be coming from the west. That's how it is.

Way back then, when I was a young man, the ice would stay for a long time. In the spring, they're hunting on the ice, catching seal pups. That's how it was. They would hunt on the ice until the end of June. In the early 70s, the ice started to break up early, and it got earlier and earlier. This was happening. It was quite scary. We were still out there in the middle of winter, in the month of December. For two years, the ice broke up in December, and there were huge waves. It was noticeable. The ice would break up. And today, I notice where there used to be no open water, it exists now. You know what this is? Open spots in the ice that never existed before? Being a hunter, being out there, you really notice this. We are always cautious when we're out there. Today, we sometimes have to alter our hunting travel routes on the ice because of this. I notice the ice is melting.

When the white man known as Boss arrives at Piugattuk’s hunting camp, what appears as a chance meeting soon opens up the prospect of momentous change. Boss is an agent of the government, assigned to get Piugattuk to move his band to settlement housing and send his children to school, so they can get jobs and make money.

      • 19:06 Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change: Peter Kanayuk on Animal Health
